335 Yard Drive

Yep, I played golf yesterday and I had a drive that was 335 yards long,,, Now I know that most of you don't know what this is, or how cool, but I hit that little white ball farther than 3 football fields end to end... If ya know someone who plays, ask them,,,,,, :-)

Now I know that most members here are bellydancers, so to celebrate this amazing feet, if you come to Tribal Fest, mention this amazing feet to me, and say aloha, I will let you play with one of my balls,,, yep, you read it here,,, mention the 335 yard drive, say aloha, and you can be holding one of my balls,,,, just for you special people,,,, but you may have to hurry, because I may get tired of handing out my balls, and stop letting people play with them....

Now Noey, if you read this, get your mind outa the gutter! Love Ya , Dad...

http://www.dunesatmauilani.com/ If ya wanna see...

I found a new golf buddy who is also a DJ... DJ Alan, but he's like a 6 handicap or less and can kick my butt up one side the fairway and the other..... we only have played once, but I know we will play more... cool guy,,,,

Yep, yesterday was it.... I was wrecked because the night before I got home at 4 am from my DJ gig.... But my lovely wife took care of me and we just chilled around the house.

But at 5:30 we had dinner reservations at a new place to eat.... Halii Maile Genral Store.
www.bevgannonrestaurants.com

WOW!!!!!!! this place has THE rep here on Maui and boy does it deserve it! I had the rib eye steak and a Ceasers Salad!! And I started off with a Guava Mai Tai. Honestly,, the BEST steak I have ever had!

Kajira and the Seafood Curry,,,, she was way way happy,,,, of course the class of wine she was drinking helped! LOL She's a cheap date. But the curry was very rich and creamy,,, she says very yummy....

For desert I had the Lilikoi creme brulee in a Almond brittle candied shell with fresh fruit.... To die for!!!!

Kajira had the Mango Sorbet,,, good to, but mine was better! :-)

We came home it was one of those real clear Maui nights... so at about 7:30 we went out to the back yard and sat on the recliners and watched the stars.... Nothing beats Maui stars from our house. Being off the grid in the middle of nowhere there are zero night lights and you can see them like they are shinning little diamonds in the sky......

That mysterious red and blue blinking light in the sky that never moves is kinda strange and freaky,, it never moves,, just floats there... hummmm

Really you can't believe it. With the air being so clean here because of us being so far away and the tradewinds that keep us clear, it is truly humbling to think whatever force made all this, was also caring enough to let me and Kajira end up here in the oh so special spot.

It got down to 70 so it was a tad cold so we went inside to hunker down in front of a warm TV....

All in all a wonderful BD.. mahalo Kajira for sharing it with me.... I love you.....

Yep, I broke 90!!! Now I know most of you here are not golfers, but that's a huge stepping stone.... breaking 90!!!

Then you go after breaking 80!!

I did it at www.pukalanigolf.com

only time will tell if I can do it again, but with a 91 last week, well it seems like I should. It helps that I have been playing more because as you know, practice makes perfect! LOL

Anyway, Herb my usual golf buddy signed the scorecard and I will place it in a place of honor with my collection of Logo Balls...

Yep, I gotta make a post just once in awhile,,,,, Mahalo for those of you that stay on so my little Tribe shows up! LOL

I played at the Dunes yesterday,, had a great front 9 a 42 but I just fell apart on the back, and I fell hard, ended up shooting a 106!.... Man I fell hard...

It's bad because I don't get out as often as I would like, getting out twice or three times a month really just doesn't cut it... I dunno.....

I did get over to Oahu and play a place called Lunna Hills..... Freaking GREAT!!! Like playing in Jurassic Park! Sometimes the drive from the green to the next tee was like 10 mins thru this wild forest... very cool....

Anyway,,,, aloha

oh well it was just on the front 9,,, but for me that was great!! I shot and even 50 on the back, so even at 91,,, it was okay...

On the front I even had a 7 on a par 3!! damm hole,,,, without that, it really would have been a great score.

It was at The Dunes At Maui Lani, which is sorta becoming my home course. The one that I play the most and the one that a lot of people say is one of the hardest on Maui.

They are doing some work on it so they have 5 par 3's. 2 on the front, 3 on da back. When they get it done, it should make it more fun....

Why 18 Holes?

Kajira dug this up for me. Ever wonder why there are 18 hole on a golf course, not 20 or 15?

During a discussion among the club's membership board at St. Andrews in 1858, a senior member pointed out that it takes exactly 18 shots to polish off a fifth of Scotch.

By limiting himself to only one shot of Scotch per hole, the Scot figured a round of golf was finished when the Scotch ran out.

Of course nowdays, it's when the beer or pot runs out for most. Me, it's when the Rum run s out! LOL

I played yesterday before my gig,,,,, After thinking about the gas to get there, breakfast before, green fees, Coke from da cart girl and then gas to get home,,,, it's gotta be around $90.00,,,,

I did declare 12 rounds off my taxes last year, 1 a month for business. I plat with my agent,,,, but I try not to touch his balls as he always like to keep them clean on his own. I offer sometimes to wash his balls, but he likes to use a special towel that wont scratch his balls, wereas I like to put mine in the washer and pulll it up and down and get them all soapy and wet, and then dry them off with a towel...

Too each his own I guess.....

I went out and played yesterday at Ka'anapali... www.kaanapali-golf.com

I shot a 94 and on one drive hit it 315 yards!!

Ok,, at about 240 yards it got to the top of the hill and rolled down down down.... but still it left me with about 37 yards to the green,, I pared ..

I even took a pic if the beer cart girl,,, I'll post that later...

It was great to be out because Kajira and I have been working so hard on Tribal Fest.

I played from the "Sand" tees,,, they have Lava, Sand, Fern & Hibiscus.

From the sand it was 6010 yards with a rating of 69.0 and a slope of 130... someday I hope someone tells me what those mean! LOL

Maybe next week .... :)

I manged to get my balls out on Saturday and play "up on the hill" at Pukalani... Great views and some hard holes with new bunkers that they've added since that I was there last.

Herb came up and we had a great time. They need the support of the community because someone started a fire that took out the Pro Shop, Cart Barn and Resturant...

This has been a quest of mine since we moved to Maui, to play The Plantation Course!

From their web site:
The par 73, 7,411-yard Plantation Course, is the course of the champions, site of the PGA TOUR Mercedes Championships each January featuring an elite field of previous year's PGA TOUR winners. The field has included such golf greats as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Davis Love III and more. The grand scale of the course designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore unfurls across natural geographic formations and pineapple plantation fields that take your breath away.

Sunday, 10"30am... I'm gonna get my ass kiicked! LOL

I strongly advise you to stay on Maui for a few extra days to enjoy Paradise.
Optional excursions (such as the ever-popular ‘Ulalena Show in Lahaina and the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm in Kula) are offered during The Intensive.

This DVD is for your personal use only and will not be made available to the public. *Also, no videotaping is allowed during the closing show or during any classes.* There is only one DVD set allowed per participant (sorry, no extra orders for friends or family). You will receive info about how to sign up to perform in the show after you are registered, in Spring 2007. The Show is open to the public, your friends and family for $15 at the door.
To keep most up-to-date, keep checking and posting on the !BlackSheep, Tribal Fest,
Maui Intensive Tribe on www.tribe.net. If you are not already on Tribe, join it by going to the web URL above. Otherwise, you can still read but not interact at: bsbd.tribe.net Chuck usually posts news there first, and all the most current info and photos appear there well before they do on my site. It’s a great way to stay in contact and ask questions from others coming or who have been in the past, a wonderful way to find a roomie or flight companion, car rental friend, etc.

** PLACES TO STAY **

The Studio Maui (TSM) where The Intensive takes place is in Haiku which is part of Upcountry Maui, and/or North Shore (depending upon how close to the beach you are staying). Please read under “Itinerary” for complete info about TSM.
**PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS AREA OF MAUI HAS *ZERO HOTELS*! I do *NOT* recommend staying in Kihei (about 45 minutes-1 hour each way), nor do I care for the hotels in Kahului - because they are not the best and are still 40 minutes drive one way to The Studio. Anything like a hotel or timeshare will not only add extra dollars to your gas tank, to your pocketbook (as they cost much more than vacation homes), but also to your long days due to the drive. DO NOT STAY ANYWHERE ON WEST MAUI SUCH AS LAHAINA OR KAPALUA DURING THE INTENSIVE! I also do not recommend camping in Hana or Kipahulu as those places are also about a 2 hour’s drive one way, too.
Instead, our solution is to rent vacation homes! These are fully-equipped homes or cottages that usually hold from one person up to 8 on average. They are not hotels. They usually start you out with a roll of toilet paper, but you are expected to supply your own after that. You will have pillows, sheets and towels needed for the number of people in your home and the beds will be made upon arrival, after that it’s up to you. They all have fully functioning bathrooms and kitchens so you can buy your food at Mana Foods in Paia or Down to Earth in Makawao (some groceries are available in the Marketplace where The Studio Maui is, too). Many have hot tubs and great views, some even have outdoor showers as well as indoor for a true paradisaical experience! But don’t expect any maids or staff on call. Usually there are no restaurants within walking distance on this side of the island unless you get really, really lucky (though they are plentiful in and across from the Haiku Center Marketplace where TSM is).
For Maui Intensive 3 we are suppling a list of web URLs to start for those of you looking for places to stay on your own (print this page or read n’ scroll), as well as a new travel agent who has access to more vacation rentals than our previous agent, Joni Stone, did. Joni passed this job over to Paula Wagner, so if you’ve worked with Joni in the past, no worries, you have her blessing and mine to go directly through Paula now.
Paula is expecting you to call or email her, and will step into Joni’s role of keeping track of who is with The Maui Intensive 3 (*so please make SURE you mention you are with this group*) so you folks who are traveling alone and wish to share a home with other dancers can save money. I also suggest you get one or two cars per home, depending upon the number of people sharing it with you. Then you all can pitch in car for rental and gas, even though it has to be driven by one person only for insurance reasons. Once the home is full, I’m sure Paula will be happy to supply you with one another’s email addies so you guys can work it out and get started knowing one another even before you’ve arrived!
Paula is also happy to find a home just for you, you and a friend, or you and your family as well. You do not have to stay with other dancers from The Intensive. Just tell her what you need and she will handle it, or go it on your own as you like (but do rent a car on your own, too, as you really do need one here). Paula can help with packages that include airfare, vacation home and car rental as well.
To reach Paula, please call her: 808.573.5669 or email her: info@koolauvacations.com Her site is: www.koolauvacations.com She is fully licensed as a Travel Agency in the State of HI, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and manages her company with the help of Cliff Nickens.
Maui is one of the biggest vacation destinations in the world, and has been voted by Conde Nast International Magazine as “Best Island” for 10 years *in a row*. It is also the world’s number one wedding destination (we call it “getting Mauied”), so bear in mind that IT IS NEVER TO EARLY TO MAKE RESERVATIONS!!!
Many homes have multiple bedrooms and if you get together with your Tribe.net friends, troupe-mates or family, it is the best way to save money!
Also, if you have been to Maui and stayed someplace in the North Shore/Upcountry area that you liked, please post it on our Tribe (bsbd.tribe.net) so others can find it. Keeping up on our Tribe is the best way to stay informed about this event as well as Tribal Fest.
For those of you wishing to not work with Paula or Cliff, we are suppling these links for your use as a starting point, but remember, Chuck and I have NOTHING to do with them and are not in any way involved in the booking, maintenance or anything at all to do with your privately found accommodations. We also do not check out personally any homes from Paula.

www.hawaiibliss.com - Chuck did a wedding here and says it’s amazing!

www.peaceofmaui.com/ - a visiting dancer friend found this place and loved it.

www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com/Haw....htm

www.mamasfishhouse.com/ - we all love this place! Not only for staying but for eating that really, really, really great dinner you WILL remember....totally ONOLICIOUS! (Not cheap, but worth every dollar.) It’s places to stay range from as low as $60 p/night for a studio to $475 p/night for a cottage on the beach.

And check out The Studio Maui’s site for even more places to stay if you wanna book on your own: www.thestudiomaui.com

** MAUI INTENSIVE 3 ITINERARY **

ALL CLASSES AND THE SHOW ARE HELD AT THE STUDIO MAUI (TSM).
TSM is in Haiku, Maui, nestled in a corner of the Haiku Center Marketplace. The address is: 810 Haiku Road, Suite 265, Haiku, HI, 96708. Their phone: 808.575.9390. Please visit: www.thestudiomaui.com for more information (including great directions), and for info about their abundant yoga, dance, somatics, 5 Rhythms/Wave and other classes as well as for places to see, things to do and photos of the Temple that is The Studio. In fact, right before and right after this Intensive they will be featuring other week long intensives of their own, so keep in touch. I know there will be Latin dance featured (samba, tango, salsa) as well as other really cool offerings in summer 2007! It is the only studio on Maui of its kind and features sprung bamboo floors (no shoes allowed unless dance soles), state-of-the-art sound systems and mirrors.
Everyone is given a lavender sachet to take home and after our product explanation and demonstration (all their products are made here on Maui), we are given a guided tour of the gardens by one of the friendly and knowledgeable staff people there. You will be invited to touch and smell all manner of lavenders (they currently have about 50 varieties) as well as other cool plants like protea, scented geraniums and lots more. After our tour, we’ll feast on real crab cakes with mango-pineapple chutney for our pupus (= meze, tapas, appetizers) and a salad prepared for us right in front of our eyes by one of Maui’s chefs who is there that day. S/he explains all ingredients and can make yours totally vegan or with grilled Maui chicken for us protein-lovers. (*Please tell me when sending your money for this optional excursion whether you are vegan or omnivorous so they can get a head count and have all ingredients ready.*)
As if that were not enough, we then have time to visit the gift store for some of the amazing products we’ve tasted and smelled to take home! For more info, visit: www.aliikulalavender.com
If you choose not to go to The Farm, you may wish a relaxing morning at the beach, waterfalls, or shopping instead.
2:00 - 2:15 - *snack break
2:15 - 4:00 - class with Heather
*eat a healthy breakfast and bring a snack bar or other food for these breaks!

Friday, July 20:

11:00 - 1:00 - class with Jill
1:00 - 3:00 - class with Heather
3:30 - Be ready to go - bring your nicer casual clothes to class so you can change into them and get a quick bite, or food to go at one of the many restaurants in The Haiku Center Marketplace before we leave for our next optional (but “must-see”!) excursion, ‘Ulalena. Or, you can leave class early and meet back at The Studio Maui or Haiku Center Marketplace and drive alone as everyone will be given directions to the location in Lahaina (Maui Myth and Magic Theatre). It is imperative that no one leaves Haiku after 4:00 p.m. or you will arrive late.
Even the locals (kama’aina) can’t beat the deal I will get our group for the Producer’s Package! This package allows us one free drink, center seats, a cast photo and best of all: a chance to stay after to talk with the cast and crew about the show! This excursion is also open to your friends and family at the same rate you will get. The rate will depend upon how many people go: the more, the cheaper!
So, you will hear from me in Spring 2007 about this again once you are registered, and I have a head count. That will be the time to sign up, once I know the exact price. Meanwhile you can start thinking about whether you’re going or not. There is no limit to the number of seats I can get at this rate, which will vary between $55 (if we don’t have many people) to as low as $45 (regular rate, not even for Producer’s Package, is $69)! So invite your non-dancing friends and family to this show.
It was developed by Arra, whose dance company members are the cast of Cirque du Soliel’s “Mystere” in Las Vegas. The aerialists train in Montreal, Canada, and are every bit as amazing as those in any Cirque production. The stage has those cool turning-and-disappearing multi-level stages in it, allowing for seamless set changes. Projections, incredible lighting, actual singers and musicians piped through surround-sound speakers with some recorded narration provide a rich theatrical dance production of the history of Maui from before the arrival of the Polynesians until Maui Nei (Maui Today). It is at once poignant and delightful, thoughtful and enthralling........ I highly recommend you attend! Check it out: www.ulalena.com

Saturday, July 21:

12:00 noon - 2:30 p.m. - class with Jill
2:30 - 6:30 - our show set-up. Anyone not dancing is invited to help transform our classroom into a theater as well! We may even need help from your non-dancing friends or family, and then they can get in free. :-D
6:15 p.m. - all performers must be ready (if you’re in the second half you can add your adornments during our *brief* intermission) and in the room no later than 6:15. This will also enable you to get a good seat to our own show! You can watch - just bring a casual cover-up and an item to leave on your seat while you dance ;-D Info about how to sign up to perform will be emailed to all participants in Spring 2007 when it’s time to also make the ‘Ulalena decision.
6:30 - doors open to the public

** ABOUT HEATHER & JILL - CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & BIOS **

Heather Stants’s Class Description:
Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for their original and funky movement base and complex layered staging. Heather and Sara will treat you to a week long tour through the "Urban Tribal mind”. Classes will begin with Pilates based conditioning (note from Kajira: Heather has recently been certified to teach Pilates!), then students will learn movements that make up the Urban Tribal vocabulary. Heather and Sara will string these movements into combinations to be used in choreography or improvisation. Other topics to be covered include interactive partnering, layered improvisation and floor work. Bring those kneepads!

Heather’s Bio
Heather Stants is a lifelong artist and dance enthusiast with a degree in photography and
fine arts. Her explorations in tribal bellydance began over ten years ago when she became the assistant director of Read My Hips* (www.readmyhips.com) in Chicago, Illinois. In 1999 Heather moved to San Diego, California and formed Urban Tribal Dance Company.
Heather's diverse movement and arts background feeds her creativity and her innovative approach to choreography. Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for it's "urban" and modern
influenced dance style, a pared down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, athleticism and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "Troupe of the Year" in
Zaghareet! Magazine's Golden Belly Awards. In addition to teaching several weekly classes in San Diego since 1999, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company have been touring extensively since 2004 sharing their love of modern tribal bellydance with dancers in theU.S. and abroad.
Read more about Heather and Urban Tribal on their site: www.urbantribaldance.com
and on their tribe: urbantribaldance.tribe.net

*Notes from Kajira: Read My Hips founder, Stephanie Barto, was the first person ever
to be certified to teach the FatChanceBellyDance format for American Tribal Style (ATS) Bellydance. In fact, in the first “Collector’s Edition” of The Tribal Bible, Heather was featured as part of Read My Hips in a full-page photo. Her background in ATS and many other dance forms means she knows how to fuse styles, which I personally respect.
I have had the pleasure of hosting Heather and Urban Tribal Dance Company at Tribal Fest as a teacher and/or as performers since inception of that event. Heather is a consummate professional in every way and a joy to work with. I know we will all learn so much and have fun while we do so with her leading the class!

Jill Parker’s Class Description and Bio:

** Please note that all text below has been written by Kajira.**
Jill’s info is pending and will be posted as soon as she gets it to me. But you can learn lots about Jill by visiting her site: www.ultragypsy.com and her tribe: ultragypsy.tribe.net
I can tell you that she is a beautifully skilled and talented artist with whom I have also had the pleasure of hosting for years at Tribal Fest. Jill began bellydancing with FatChanceBellyDance (FCBD) in the early 1990s and quickly became one of their best-known dancers. The first time I saw FCBD was at Rakkasah way back then, and it was her duet with Rina Rall that brought me running to Carolena’s booth after the show to get class info! I started taking class immediately after, and didn’t stop for 8 years. If I hadn’t seen Jill and Rina dance that day along with the rest of the company, who knows where I’d be now.....
Later Jill left FCBD to create Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater Company and has not stopped creating since. Besides being a fabulous choreographer and improvisational artist, I know that they also perform specialty dances, put on entire shows and even do fire and bellydance acts as a main highlight at Burning Man each year. Jill has traveled with Heather and members of their respective companies on the famous Spark Tour, and she has taught all over the U.S. and in Germany.
I’m pretty sure her classes will include her famous “Jill’s Drills” as well as information about how to fuse tribal with other forms, and how to add theatrical touches to your performances. She keeps studying many dance forms and is expert at fusion with integrity, since she knows how each form works in order to put them together, like Heather.

**These are reasons why I have chosen these two women (and both are bringing assistants, I believe) to teach at Maui Intensive 3. Because I respect them as people and as artists and know everyone will be stoked to spend this week with such pros!**

** MORE FUN ACTIVITIES ON MAUI! **

Here are some ideas for before or after The Intensive, so plan to stay! Below are several web links to these and other fun places, so please print or read-n-scroll. Please be aware that Chuck and I have supplied this list for your convenience, but are in no way responsible for your well-being or enjoyment while experiencing them.
Few visitors are lucky enough to experience the opportunities that the North Shore and Upcountry Maui has to offer. Located just minutes from some of Maui’s most spectacular beaches, Haleakala Crater, fantastic horseback riding, zip line tours (Chuck and Kajira LOVE the zipline! ;-D), ATV tours, world class yoga instructors, massage therapists, artists, Hawaii’s “old-west” Upcountry paniolo town, Makawao (paniolo = cowboy), and the wonderful North Shore town of Paia.

1.) Horseback riding - enjoy riding through the pastures of Upcountry Maui, with breathtaking views of the surrounding areas such as Haleakala, West Maui Mountains, valley views that not only include “downtown” Kahului, but the spectacular ocean view of both North and South shores at once. Ride through the bamboo forests, through streams into the eucalyptus forests and even up into Haleakala Crater! Most rides include lunch, sometimes barbeque (which in Hawai’i has been honed to a fine art, complete with multi-cultural influences like Hawaii Nei [nei = today]).

2.) Haleakala Crater - experience the largest walkable crater in the world! (The entire island of Manhattan, NY, can fit inside this ‘inactive’ volcano!) The setting will astound you, with its multitude of colors and changing landscapes. See plants and animals that are endemic to this area, such as the Ahinahina (ahinihina = silvery) aka Silversword. A few have been taken to “The Big I” aka the island of Hawaii, but are not thriving there as they do on Maui. They are found nowhere else on earth! Other unusual species include the Chukkers (fat, big birds that walk around in groups and look kinda like quails) and our state bird, the Nene, which are found on most of our islands after becoming a protected species, but no where other than Hawaii. (Nene = goose and are descendants of wayward Canadian Geese who no longer migrate and have developed different traits for subtropical living year-round.)
Haleakala (= House of the Sun) is a National Park, so trails are well marked. I recommend Sliding Sands Trail for an easy walk where you can decide how far you wanna go. Ways to see Haleakala begin with a stunning drive through the many terrains and ecosystems of Haleakala. See a sunset or a sunrise. Look out over to the island of Hawaii off in the distance. A hike down into the crater can be as long as 20 miles one way (from one end of the crater and back), or simply turn around when you have hiked enough. You can also rent cabins for a night or two if you wish to experience the crater for longer, and maybe find a some lava tubes and other cool stuff others rarely see. Reservations can be made through the Hakeakala National Park Service and are usually booked about 6 months in advance.
The altitude on Haleakala’s summit is over 10,000 feet, so wear real walking shoes, long pants and layers to fight the chill.

3.) Bike Down the Volcano - Begin your day with a sunrise at the very top of Haleakala, some coffee or tea and a light snack the bike companies serve, put on your gear (supplied by the bike companies, who also drive you up), and begin your 10,000 foot descent all the way down to Haiku (in the same center as The Studio Maui) or into Paia Town. You can also rent bikes and ride down alone, map in hand. More fun, but also more risky than going with the groups, who have protective vans both in front and in back of your group.

4.) Helicopter Tours - Yet another way to see Haleakala crater! Don't miss the opportunity to hover over the lush valleys and waterfalls of Hana, Kipahulu and Kaupo on East Maui, as well as the West Maui Mountains (aka Kahalewai = where the waters meet). Because so much of Maui is inaccessible by car, a helicopter flight is truly the best way to see all that our island has to offer without some serious backpack hiking for days.

5.) Baldwin Beach - a large white sand beach and park, with bathrooms, lifeguard, pavilion, BBQ areas and picnic areas. Great for long walks along the seashore.

6.) Baby Beach- is at the very end of Baldwin beach, and named so for the gentle waters protected by a long reef. A favorite for families. Go around the rock outcropping for clothing-optional swims (also called Baby Beach). This beach is in between Baldwin and Paia Bay Beach.

7.) Paia Bay Beach - closer to town, but otherwise the same stretch of sand as Baldwin and Baby. There is a great Youth Center there with cheap, good food as well as a skate park and a hangout to help keep kids in touch with healthy ways to deal with angst and constructive ways to learn how to do things, through free classes and work days, beach clean-up and pride in the good they are doing. They even prepare the food and run the kitchen under adult supervision. Kids from ages 8 - 18 participate, both sexes and all races and religions.

8.) Ho’okipa - you don’t need to be a world class surfer, kite boarder or wind surfer to enjoy
Ho’okipa. This is a must see spot to stop and check out the colorful action out on the water. You
can walk down to the tide pools as well.

9.) Shop Makawao - the "Paniolo" (cowboy) Town, with its many art galleries, Hawaiian shops, clothing stores, jewelry and crystals, cafes, library, and a variety of terrific restaurants.

10.) Shop Paia Town - also rich in local flavor, with its myriad of locally owned stores full of all kinds of gifts, swimsuits, local wear, an award-winning tattoo and piercing parlor and a wide range of restaurants, both indoor and outdoor. This is where our best food store on the North Shore/Upcountry is, too, so buy food on your way to your vacation home here at Mana Foods. Mana carries the best fresh deli and salad bar on the island, as well as organic meats and lotsa fresh fruits and veggies.
Paia has long been a hangout for locals, surfers, tourists and “hippies” that feature both upscale boutiques as well as affordable and unique stores, and three stores with stuff that bellydancers might love (well, at least 3 ;-D) such as The Indigo, Mandala Ethnic Arts and the one right across from them (they carry great jewelry as well as very unusually styled Jewish hamsas for all price ranges)!

11.) Private Massage, Acupuncture, or Reflexology - Maui is renowned for its wide range of skilled body healers and massage practitioners. If you enjoy having body work, or want to experience it for the first time, you will not want to miss out on the plethora of talent that is readily available. It can make all the difference in the world!

12.) Hana Guided Van Tours - Leave the driving to someone else, sit back and enjoy the ride.
Local Hawaiian guides provide an informative, interesting and entertaining narrative to all the amazing sites and treasures that Hana has to offer. Lunch, snacks and beverages are provided.

13.) Hana On Your Own - Give yourself a full day and you can take the drive to Hana on your own. Pack your own lunch or grab a world famous picnic basket in nearby Paia. Begin your drive along the breathtaking, famous North Shore of Maui. Stop at waterfalls, visit arts and crafts stands and other attractions along the way. Enjoy local snacks at the food and fruit stands that are dotted throughout the trip. Be sure not to miss the bamboo forest - it’s not marked well but I think I can explain how to get there, so ask me when here. You can hike right into nothing but bamboo and it’s really cool! Keep going over one little stream and then one you will want to walk through partially and stay on rocks partially, go left and follow the trail to a lovely pond!
The Bamboo Forest is across from some gorgeous Rainbow Eucalyptus trees - the most beautiful species I have ever seen! "The Garden of Eden" at mile marker 11 as you wind your way to Hana is a nice stop for that picnic or just a stroll, and there are numerous ponds, an outlook over famous Keanae (one of our last remaining “old ways” towns that supplies the rest of us with ‘da kine’ kalo (aka taro in Tahitian). Be sure to stop at Black Sands Beach (Waianapanapa State Park) as well as Red Sands in Hana! If you have lotsa time and energy, stop for a walk through the Lava Tube between these 2 beaches. Red Sands is especially great as it is protected by a rock wall, inside of which is calm water for swimming and pretty OK snorkeling, too. You can jump off the rocks into the calmer pool while the waves (‘nalu’) crash ferociously outside the natural “pool”.

14.) Hang Gliding - if your’re adventurous (no kidding!) you will never forget the experience of riding tandem while soaring gracefully like a bird over Maui's awe-inspiring coastlines, the gentle slopes, dramatic gulches and valleys of Haleakala.

15.) 18 holes of fabulous golf at the nearby Pukalani golf course. (One of Chuck's fave places to play!)

16.) ATV Adventures, Zip Line Tours, Luaus, Snorkel and Dive trips and so much more! In summertime, I recommend a dolphin tour to experience swimming near (or with if you are lucky and calm) our huge pods of about 150-200 spinner dolphins as well as the bottlenose dolphins that hang out with them.

17.) Take a private, semi-private or small group class with Kajira! I also offer Teacher Certification (please look under that title elsewhere on this site for the details and qualifications) in my format for American Tribal Style (ATS) BellyDance. I’m also versed in oriental styles and offer coaching on any subject having to do with The Dance. Besides being an expert teacher and innovator of ATS, I am skilled in Turkish Romani-Oriental fusion, veil work, use of baskets, skirt work, scimitar or sword/saber work (single or double), as well as the Moroccan Guedra Blessing Ritual.

There are many, many more things to do! The popular ones do sell out weeks in advance. You can guarantee your reservations for some of these more popular tours and activities with no prepayment required.

Here is a place to start:
www.mauiactivities.net/index.lasso

Please check into all activities to make sure they are right for you. Many need your reservations in advance, especially the Old Lahaina Luau which is one of the only ones that is *all Hawaiian* and why it is so popular. Their web URL is: www.oldlahainaluau.com

Playing Princeville on Kaua'i

Kajira and I took a week off from the hussle and bussle of Maui to spend a week on Kaua'i... we just had to get away!!

So I took the chance to play all of Hawai'i hardest couse the number 63 ranked on Golf Digests top 100 courses in the world...

It is the truest "links" course I have ever played.

I was paired up with a guy from Az. who was a scratch golfer and played from the "tips" black tees, the farthest back you can hit from!

So of course so did I. Usually I play from the white tees and the overall added yardage was 800 yards MORE from the tips!

My tee shots were not bad for me, but playing frtom back there, I was putting them into the bunkers or not clearing the ravines....

The Prince Course has perhaps a half-dozen holes worthy of "signature distinction". The seventh, at 205 yards over a ravine stretching down to Hanalei Bay, is a beautiful beast. And the tee for the 390-yard 12th sits 10 stories above a mango-lined fairway that appears no wider than a bowling lane.

Looking as if it has emerged full-blown from nature, it chugs uphill, jumps ravines, and careens downhill like a rollercoaster. What a ride!

Anyway, I stopped keeping score after I lost my 10th ball, but I had a great time on a great golf course!

Check out the couple of pics....

ok, not really, but made ya look didn't I?

I've been play about once a week and at Maui prives that adds up... I do miss the mainland prices!!

But I played the Emerald Course at Wailea yesterday, shot a 98, but had a nice time...

that is a very pretty layout...

I gotta work on my putting, my hand eye thing,,, geeeze sometimes I hit it and think "where the fuc* was I aiming! My balls can't find the hole to save my life!"

anyway.... maybe next week,,, but with all the bellydancers coming to the Island, I'm not sure how July will be...

Two Outstanding Rounds

I played on Saturday at "The Dunes " and shot a 92!! I was very pleased with this round having battled the " breaking 100" deal I gave myself a pat on the back...

I played today at Kahili and shot an 85!!!! both rounds I played with my bud Herb... he usually kills me shooting in the high 80's.

but I beat him BOTH days... Ok he was having a bad day and I was having a GREAT day...

The key to these two rounds was that I really tried not to kill the drive.... and when I do that, it stays on the fairway and usually goes farther...

Today my longest drive was 281 yards and yes the downhill part helped, but I would guess it was at least 250 in the air.....

anyway,,,, I'm a content guy....... aloha

9 Fairways 233 Average...

OK so far I've played twice this week,,, the first time I hit 9 fairways and averaged 233 yards per drive the logest being 281,,,, but my score was 113

the next day I took it easier on my drives and hit 11 fairways and averaged 216 yards and had a score of 98. The longest being 249

I made an effort not to lose balls.... but on the second day I lost them out of the fairway, not off the tee.... so that was a good start...

I also tried to keep in mind to play bogey golf..... it helps to play more than once a month...

Choking

I was playing Elleair last week with Haloti.. I was having a great front 9 but on the 7th I checked my score, 32 (which is great for me by the way!) and with two pars 4's looking at me I was thinking WOW!! this could be outstanding...

I told myself to relax and play smart with my shots.... If I could par both holes that would give me a 40 and even if I bogeyed them bot, it would still be a 42 and on the back nine even if I shot 50, I'd still be in the low 90's...

Well I choked! I drove both my balls out of bounds and fell apart carding a 7 and an 8!!, so much for my great front 9.

It was kinda downhill from there and I finished with a 101.... so close yet, so far.....

Maybe the Masters will give me a few tips.... off to the tube...

oh yeah there is a new pic of Haloti,,, look for his ball hanging there....

OK, I went back to that place that I was not happy with, see other post,,,, and now they have all the fixes done and have both 9"s open.

I played with Herb and Haloti DUH!! LOL

The course is in great shape, and now the even have GPS with brand new golf carts!

The views are still stunning and I played really good..

I had 3 drives over 260 yard but most were in the 245 range.

I hit 13 fairways whbich I think is an all time high..

BUT I had 3 terrible holes 2 9's and a 7!!! arg!!

Still no beer cart girls but I would say yes to playing this course again. The views and the greens make it all worth while...

Haloti and I played Makena Resort South Course last week,,, I beat him,,, but that's not saying much because I shot a 104!!!

It was a nice place $65.00 local rate, no GPS but the sprinkler heads were marked so that was cool.....

I had some great drives but my putter head fell off the shaft so on the back nine I rented a blade putter,,, hard to get used to and I would like to blame that, and the 4 iron I used for putting on 8 & 9 as the reason for the high score...... I would like to, but...........................

Well it's been awhile but I got to play golf today 1/13/06 and I am going to play tomorrow .

Today it was with Herb from Envisions Entertainment and we played at "The Dunes At Maui Lani"

It was named one of Golf Digests best secret hidden treasures.

It was GREAT to play... but our tee time was @ 6:53 AM!! damm that was early. We had the 1st tee time of the day so nobody was in front of us to slow us down.

We hooked up with a visitor from CA and we got our round in just under 3 hours !!

I gotta play more

New Faces On The Course

Hummm,, Aloha to the newbies here at the golf tribe!!!

Gotta love the bellydancing golfers! LOL Mahalo ladies!

I know you stopped in to here about me playing with my stick and balls, but you'll have to wait. I can't wait to get my hand wrapped around my stick and swing it at my balls!

It has been kinda quiet here becuase I haven't gotten out much. With the move to a new house and the silly season here for DJ's, it's been hard to get out. I'm going into golf withdrawals!

I did a gig for the Kaanapali Golf Courses www.kaanapali-golf.com it was their company holiday party and I got them to throw in two rounds of golf with my normal pay.

A round there on the Tournament Coure is $160.00!! So it's cool..

They just upgraded part of the course and it should be in good shape... Hopefully in the next week or so, I should be able to get out and I will take pics and give you a review.

And yes I will take pics of the beer cart girls!

man oh man,,, a 112!! ARG!! as you can tell I haven't been playing mush but Herb called (see photos) and wanted to play so we did,,, on the front 9 I almost averaged a lost ball a hole!! on the day I managed to loose 11!!

But it was nice being out,,, I just gotta keep better track of my balls...

They just have a mind of their own...when they see a nice big wet hole, that's where they like to go!!

and trying to keep them out is almost impossible!

I leave the stick in the hole.........

I notice for some reason today that when I'm just playing with myself, that I leave the flagstick in the hole when I putt my balls.

made me wonder if all men when playing with just themselves, leave the stick in the hole, or pull it out so their balls can drop in easier?

Just a ramdom thought.....

I played today, was gonna play with a new guy named Garrett but he didn't show up!!! Not even a call....

Anyway, my playing was ok, but I did have a nice 292 yard drive on a par 4... my second shot from 187 with a 5 iron, landed in the green side bunker!! Took two to get out!!

Damm, I hit a lot of bunkers today!!

But at least I got to play!!

ICK!! what can I say.... They are still working on the course and it might be nice in about a year or two, but now it's just ick..

The only saving grace are the views.

For the same price at Elleair you get GPS in the carts and an ice chest with two bottles of water and green that aren't browns!!

The fairways are so hard I lost some balls that hit the middle and just kept rolling and I lost them!!

I wish I could say something nice, but it was so windy that I personally had a hard time playing.

I won't be back for awhile..

and they didn't even have beer cart girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I played twice this past week,, once at Elleaire and shot a 93 and I even had a 10 on one hole!!

At Wailea Blue I shot an even 100 with 2 8's thrown in there..

I had a birdie on a par 4 405 yards.. my second shot (140 yards) landed two inches from the hole,, a tap in birdie!!

A pretty good week for me.

Went out with Haloti and Herb, Garrett & Orlando... You know them right?? LOL It is the earliest I have played. Had to set the arlam clock for ^:30 to make it after a late night gig........

Any way I outdrove them all about 80% of the time,,, but I had a few explode holes... a 13, and I closed with an 8 & 7... still came up with an 100.

The hole that I got a 13 I pulled a Kevin Costner in Tin Cup... I hit it over the water untill I made the green! Took me five shots! Four in the water. LOL

I posted a couple of shots of Herb and one of Haloti putting........

I played on Tuesday and I had a 7 ball day! I lost 7!! LOL

It was the first time that I have played here and it was an interesting experience.

There are a lot of blind shots. Some holes even have two doglegs and for being built on in a flat area of the Island has a surprizing number of hills and valleys!

It is said to be a "true links course" and since I have never been to Scotland I assume that means that there are not any "back and forth" type fairways and that was the case here.

Fairly open with a bunch o' bunkers!! I was lucky and only hit in one, but the lady in our foursome hit at least 9!!
Most of the bunkers were the deep, "pot" type ones that my partner for the day yelled at when he was in them. (kinda of a stress case of a guy, and likes to play way to fast for my tastes)

I only remember two side by side fairways and they wern't back to back holes.

The course took you around and around and you didn't get back to the clubhouse untill after the 18th.

I know now not to let the beer cart girl fly by. I could have used a Pepsi!!

The fairways were in good shape and the greens were not to fast. My swing was off from not having played and the foursome I was with,,, well let's say I didn't worry about holding anybody up! :)

I played from the blues total 6413, blacks 6841, white 5833 and reds 4768.

Longest hole 558 par 5 18th Shortest 120 par 3 3rd.

The cost was $30.00 after 2pm and that included a cart for locals and $65.00 for those of you visiting. I haven't used my pull cart since I moved to Maui!

The clubhouse was nice and even had a little bridge with a waterfall and koi fish that you pass on the way in. Kinda starts you out with a serene feeling.

The Pro Shop had shirts and balls to buy and they rent clubs.

Not a Ocean view course if that is what you like, but very nice views of Iao Valley and the mountains.

The cart attendents are pretty aggressive when you finish and it would take a lot of guts not to tip them. I gave the guy $5.00. He wiped off my clubs and put them in my van.

All in all it was a nice day and I would play it again,, or should I say, I will play it again.

I took some pics that I will post in awhile.

Chuck says, play it!

OK After I posted this I re-read it and saw way to many misspellings, so here it is again... fixed I hope!

played a new course today, Wailea "Blue" It is the first golf course built in South Maui... $105 normal green fee.... $55.00 for those of us who live here. 6700 yards from the Whites which is what I played.

Anyway, on the front 9 I shot all 5's!!!! With a close of 94 with one lost ball!!

My new driver did good and I had drives of 225, 228, 241, 254, 279, and 281!! I didn't keep track of them all.

They also had the cutest beer cart girl I've seen so far on Maui!! :) She passed by I think 4 times and was always happy and smiling,,, of course she does work for tips!!! (NO, NOT THOSE KINDS OF TIPS!)

It has 74 bunkers and I hit 5 of them. 4 ponds, which I stayed away from and if the whales were here, I'd have a great view!!

I liked it.........

I didn't take my camera, but I will be there again and bring it.

But if you want to check out the three Wailea courses,

I do that when I have the time and at Wailea I played the first 5 hole alone, so into the bushes I went!! LOL

I found 8 ProV1'S!!!!

I think there are a better class of golfers at the expensive "resort" courses.... or maybe they just are on vacation so they want to have good balls.....

Now if you stay at home with good balls,,,,, well your wife will be happy... ;)

Well I played there TWICE this week!! Made me feel a tad guilty letting my wife make all the arrangements for our trip... but hey... this is GOLF!! :) LOL

Anyway, I met a new guy there named Tom who just moved to the island in December and he shot in the mid 80's. Pretty good guy!

I shot 106 and I lost 5 balls, so if I could stop losing my balls, I'd be ok!

Today I played with my bud Haloti, I'm not sure what he shot, but I shot a 103 and lost 7 of my balls!! I gotta get that under control. All on my drives. I am averaging about 245 yards per drive.

When I go to CA I will be getting a new Callaway driver. More on that later.

I'm really begining to like Elleair. Good shape and it's fun with great views.
I added a pic of me on the 18th green.

I will be playing in CA with my bud Paul and maybe his bro Carl.

FORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Northwood is a cool place by the Russian River and is in the Redwoods!! Very neat.

Bennette Valley is the muni in Santa Rosa and used to be my main course to play with Paul and his brudder Carl...

Some nice shots,,, but I have terrible form.

Feel free to post any shots that the rest of you might have,,,,

Big Bertha Aired out!!

Well I took out my new clubs to Elleaire.

The Big Bertha 454 has a nice solid feel and a neat sound.

I also took the Heavenwood out, it replaced my 3 iron and the first time I hit it about 205 yard!s! It also havs a great solid sound when you hit it. But it does look strange and that is something I will have to get used to.

The front 9 I averaged 233 yards per drive.. not great, about what I was doing before, BUT I did have a STRAIGHT as an arrow 291 yard drive!!! WHOO HOO

I really have got to get used to not swinging hard. My long drive was the smoothest, slowest swing of the day I bet.

On the back nine my back flared up and with it, my driving range went down to a 209 yard average. :(

On the plus side I only lost 4 balls and that is better than it has been. And one I lost trying to drive over the water on 10. It went 236 yards before going in the lake.

I shot a 104 and if I could ever stop hooking, I'd be well under 100.

So all in all for the first time out and the first time swinging it,, I did pretty good. I think I hit more fairways than with "The Animal" I was using.

But time will tell.......

FORE!!!! :)

Well I did it!! Yep,,, went out and bought my new driver... Callaway Big Bertha 454 10degree.... and dispite Pauls suggestion,, I got a regular flex...

The guys at Nevada Bobs were way bored, not having anyone in the store, so we went to the swing cage and fired that puppy up!!!

I have a lower swing spead,, mid 80's so they said a regular would be better that a firm,,, Firm is for you high speed swingers!!!

They even liked my swing!!

I also bought a Callaway Heavenwood to replace my 3 iron!! I was in a mood!!

Both clubs are getting great press and after a few swings,,, I'm in love!!!

It also helps that they have red shafts..... :)

I was at Elleaire again with my work buddy Haloti (see pic).

On the 578 yard 18th when I pulled up to my ball after my drive, the GPS showed 272 the green!!!

My 1st over 300 yard drive!!!

Okay, it was on a dogleg left and I hit a great shot over the trees and landed in the middle of the fairway!! A GREAT SHOT!!

I'm not sure how they would score that, but after my drive I had 272 to the green... :)

WOW!! Not since we left Cali and my golf bubs Paul & Carl, have I played twice in one week!!

I made it to Pukalani today (Sunday) for a quick 9 but I ended up playing 18. I do like the views there and it is nice playing with mostly locals.

It was not very busy so I foraged for extra balls and found about 14. I was going to stack them and take a pic, but I forgot!! Maybe I will put them on our lawn and take a pic just for fun...

Man, that makes it sound like I have a lot of time on my hands doesn't it!! LOL

Tomorrow I am going to Lana'i for work, a wedding, but maybe I will get to check out the golf courses. They are suppose to be awesome!!

Elleair Golf Club Review

Elleair means "Spirit Of The Wind" in French (?)

I finally got out to play on the last day of March!! It had been to long. I didn't play great but I had some good shoots, long drives (for me) and some ok putts and a some nice fairway shots.

I played with a local brudder named Hefo and his friend Kay.

Hefo had a fade tee shot that wouldn't quit!! Everytime he hit it I was sure it was going to be out of bounds, but it usually ended up in the fairway. Not as long as it would be. I did out drive him on a couple of holes that I thought he was longer. Anyway......

I picked the windiest day ever to play so it was a new experience for me. The clubhouse was nice with a greeter in the parking lot who took my clubs right to the cart as I checked in. I was going to tip him after my round figuring he would be there, but he wasn't. My bad!

Speaking of carts, I love the electric ones, very quite and smoot. They don't have the power of gas, but then it makes you slow down and enjoy the course more!!

They also come supplied with a small cooler full of ice and 2 bottles of water!! Had I known, I would not have bought one!

And as you can see by the new pics, GPS!!! :)

My wife thinks it is cheating, but it does make it nice if you have never played a course before to be able to see what is ahead of you and know how far away from the hole your ball is. Very Cool!!

The course offered nice (but not great) views of ocean and the volocano, and I like that a lot. At another time of year I am sure that there would have been more flowers and such to make it look better.

The greens were in only ok shape having recently been sanded, but still not bad.

The fairways were pretty wide and you could hook or slice a ball pretty good and still have a good recovery shot. (I need this) :)

From the blues it is 6404 whites 6003 and a par 71. For all you ladies it is a 5265.

Rating Blues 70.6, 68.8 Whites and for the ladies 70.0

Slope 124, 117 and 118. (I have no idea what those mean so if anyone knows, let me know) :)

Water comes into play on 6 holes but nothing really scarey.

The longest hole is the 542 yard par 5 18th 2 handicap.

Sortest The 126 yard par 3 (duh!) 3rd.

They have a nice proshop with all the accessories that you could need and they do rent clubs and shoes.

A lighted driving range that is open till 9pm.

All in all a nice place, not to hard of a play, course in good shape.

The posted green fees are $100.00 for 18
$80.00 for twi-lite @ 1pm
Clubs $40.00
Shoes $10.00

I paid $40.00 local rate and those prices inclued the cart, as do all of Maui's courses except the Muni.

The one thing that is hard on Maui is that they will not take a tee time for a single. I'm not sure how that is everywhere else,,, maybe they all do that.

So I went to Pukalani and went on standby.

I hit a bucket or two of balls, and putted around, but after an hour, I gave up.

Oh well,,, it looks nice out today,,,, hummmm maybe I should be playing rather than sitting here moaning about it! LOL

I like this course. Great views, 10 min. from my house and lots of different looking holes.

One hole is about an 130 yard carry over a deep deep raviene for a landing on the green woth 3 bunkers. A great little par 3!!

A couple of long par 5s and a few over water shots, views of the ocean just to distract you and a nice 19th Hole!!! LOL

Chuck rates it 4 balls!! (rating system up to 5 balls)

I posted a couple of pics, just in case.
